How do you teach vocabulary?
Can it be taught by using a glossary and having childen look up the words? Does that really work? What does work if it isn’t to look up words and write the definition?

I found two methods to teach vocabulary connecting the new word to something that the kids already knew.
1st METHOD: VOCABULARY ANCHOR
It has a picture of a sailboat with an anchor dropped into the water. The students write the new word on the boat and another similar word that they already know on the anchor. The sail has a picture of the new word. The three (+) signs are similarities between the word and the three (-) signs are ways the new word is different.
I attached you the Guidelines for Teaching Vocabulary about Vocabulary Anchour: http://teacher.scholastic.com/reading/bestpractices/vocabulary/pdf/guidelines_vocab.pdf
2nd METHOD:The Frayer Model
The students write the vocabulary word in the centre and fill in areas around the word with the definition, characteristics, examples and non-examples.

Could be a good idea that you create a folder for the class so children can have a look when they want it. Also children can see what they have learn so far. Moreover, children can help to create and decorate the folder. They would love it!
